Exploring Age+ Living Lab: A Hands-On Experience in Independent Living

Aging is a journey that comes with evolving needs, and at Age+ Living Lab, the future of eldercare is brought to life through a thoughtful and interactive experience. My recent visit to the space left me with a deeper appreciation of how assistive tools and community support can empower seniors to age confidently and with dignity.

A Vision for Aging Well

The session began with an engaging introduction to Age Well SG and the 2023 Action Plan for Successful Ageing, which laid out Singapore’s long-term commitment to supporting healthy, independent aging. We also explored the stages of caregiving, an insightful framework that helped participants better understand the evolving needs of caregivers and care recipients alike.

This session, created in collaboration with the SUSS Gerontology Living Lab, is not just informative—it’s part of a bigger movement to reimagine aging in Singapore.

According to World Health Organization (WHO), being able to live in environments that support and maintain one’s intrinsic capacity and functional ability is a key to healthy ageing.

Intrinsic Capacity (IC) is a combination of an individual’s physical and mental capacities. Functional Ability (FA) is a combination of an individual’s intrinsic capacity, the environment a person lives in and how he/she reacts with their environment.

By being aware of one’s declines in intrinsic capacity and having the knowledge to choose and learn how to use gerontechnology appropriately, one can intervene to slow, stop, or reverse the declines.

Integrated Care for Older People (ICOPE) is a community-based approach towards person-centred health and social care to optimise the functional ability of older people.

A PUBLIC-HEALTH FRAMEWORK FOR HEALTHY AGEING: OPPORTUNITIES FOR PUBLIC HEALTH ACTION ACROSS THE LIFE COURSE

Gerontechnology products can be enablers for confident ageing in place and reduce the burden on caregivers. By maintaining mobility, vitality, hearing, vision, cognitive skills, and mental health capacities, seniors are empowered to take charge of their lives, continue contributing to the community, and stay connected to society and their loved ones. This leads to a positive enhancement in the quality of life.

Living and Learning Through Experience

The Living Lab features two interactive spaces—a living room and a bedroom—designed to resemble home environments. Both spaces are fitted with a variety of gerontology tools that demonstrate how thoughtful modifications can promote independence and reduce the risk of accidents at home.

What makes this visit truly special is the hands-on experience. Participants are encouraged to try out different assistive devices, sparking lively conversations and even some unexpected laughter as we experimented with unfamiliar tools.

Some of the standout devices for me on display include:

It was powerful to not just see these tools but to physically interact with them—to open drawers, simulate movement, and picture how each tool could transform a space or routine for someone aging at home.

More Than a Display—A Conversation Starter

What truly set the experience apart was the peer learning environment. Whether you’re a caregiver, family member, student, or simply curious, the space invites conversations and reflections. Many of us found ourselves sharing personal stories—how ourselves, our loved ones, parents or grandparents navigate daily life, or the little changes that made a big difference at home.

Final Thoughts

My visit to the Age+ Living Lab was a deeply meaningful experience. It reminded me that aging isn’t a problem to solve, but a phase to prepare for—with creativity, compassion, and community. Tools like those displayed in the lab don’t just support physical needs; they also empower seniors to live with confidence and dignity.

If you’re looking to better understand aging, support a loved one, or simply explore what it means to age well, I highly recommend a visit. The future of eldercare is not just about services—it's about spaces like this that spark learning, empathy, and action.
