Different Dragons: Where the Spirit of Dragon Boating Meets the Power of Inclusivity

Picture this: A fleet of dragon boats slicing through the calm waters of Marina Bay, their rhythmic paddling punctuated by fierce determination and infectious laughter. Among them is a team unlike any other—Different Dragons, a Singapore-based dragon boat team that’s rewriting the narrative of what’s possible when abilities take center stage, and disabilities fade into the background.

Dragon boating is no walk in the park (or paddle in the bay), but for the men and women of Different Dragons, it’s more than just a sport. It’s a celebration of grit, camaraderie, and the belief that everyone deserves a shot at proving their worth—on and off the water.

A Team Like No Other

Formed to challenge stereotypes and founded in January 2019, Different Dragons (DD) is a weekly Sunday morning dragon boat team for persons with disabilities and volunteers. Its biggest agenda is to use the sport of dragon boating as a loudhailer to showcase the abilities of PWDs and send the message across that while PWDs may be different, they are definitely not any less. They train all year round, defying societal expectations and smashing the limitations often placed on them. These athletes are here to prove one thing: their abilities matter far more than their disabilities.

The team was born out of a simple yet powerful vision—to create a safe and empowering space for individuals with disabilities to embrace the spirit of competition and teamwork. For the paddlers, it’s not just about winning races; it’s about finding their place in a world that too often overlooks their potential.

As one paddler put it in the CNA video, “On the boat, no one sees my disability. They only see my paddling.”

Training: A Lesson in Strength and Perseverance

Dragon boating isn’t for the faint of heart. It’s a physically demanding sport that requires synchronization, stamina, and mental resilience. The Different Dragons take this challenge head-on, training rigorously to master the art of paddling in perfect unison.

Their coach, who serves as both mentor and cheerleader, ensures that every training session is equal parts hard work and encouragement. “We focus on what they can do,” he explains. “It’s about building confidence and pushing boundaries, one paddle stroke at a time.”

And boy, do they push boundaries. From perfecting their strokes to nailing race-day strategies, these paddlers leave no stone unturned. They also bond over their shared experiences, turning the team into a tight-knit family that supports each other both on and off the water.

Breaking Barriers, One Paddle at a Time

For many of the paddlers, joining Different Dragons was a life-changing decision. Some had never been part of a sports team before; others were hesitant to step outside their comfort zones. But once they picked up those paddles, something clicked.

Take Jane (not her real name), for instance. Diagnosed with cerebral palsy, she initially doubted her ability to contribute to the team. But with consistent training and encouragement, she discovered not only her paddling prowess but also a newfound confidence. “I feel strong and capable,” she says. “I’m not defined by my disability anymore.”

For others, the team has been a refuge from the judgment and stigma they often face in their daily lives. On the boat, no one cares about labels or limitations. It’s all about teamwork, trust, and the shared goal of crossing that finish line.

Beyond the Boat: A Ripple Effect

There’s something undeniably magical about dragon boating. It’s a sport that demands unity—every paddler must be in sync for the boat to glide smoothly. This sense of togetherness mirrors the inclusivity that Different Dragons champions.

The drumbeat, the splash of paddles hitting the water, and the collective roar of “Paddles up!” create an atmosphere that’s as electrifying as it is empowering. For the paddlers, it’s a reminder that they’re part of something bigger than themselves—a team that values their contributions and celebrates their strengths.

The impact of Different Dragons extends far beyond the water. By challenging perceptions and showcasing the capabilities of individuals with disabilities, the team is inspiring others to rethink what inclusion really means.

Their story has struck a chord with many in Singapore and beyond. From spectators who cheer them on during races to organizations that see the value in supporting such initiatives, the ripple effect of their efforts is undeniable.

It’s also worth noting that Different Dragons is paving the way for greater representation of persons with disabilities in sports. Their success is a testament to what’s possible when barriers are removed and opportunities are created.

Final Thoughts

Different Dragons isn’t just a dragon boat team—it’s a movement. A movement that’s redefining what it means to be strong, capable, and inclusive.

So the next time you see a dragon boat gliding through the waters of Marina Bay, keep an eye out for this incredible team. Because behind every paddle stroke is a story of perseverance, passion, and the belief that abilities always outweigh disabilities.

Paddles up, Different Dragons. You’re an inspiration to us all.
